The spinning top is one of the most favorite games of children in all the cultures of the world. It is encountered nearly in all languages. The oldest written mention can be found in Iliad of Homer (ra. X, I. 413) in which Aias the Telamonious, during his fight with Hector, throws a stone that spins around like a top before it hits his competitor in the chest.
The ancient name of the top was stromvos, strovilos or vemvix. It was conic, made of hard wood was played with the whip, with witch it was hit in order to keep it spinning.
In Greece of the 20 th century the spinning top reached its golden age around 50's and 60's. At that time, when toys were not in abundance, having a top in the pocket was like a treasure |
